Is Medical Assisting going to be a good career to support myself?

Brittainy asked:

I’m 19 years old. I’ve been working at Wendy’s for a little over a year now and I’m tired of it. I’m currently attending school for Medical Assisting. I just want to know if I am going to be able to live comfortably after I graduate and get a job. I don’t have any kids or anything pretty much just me. I also was thinking about continuing my education to Physician’s Assistant a few years after I’m an established MA. Good idea, or no?

Unfortunately, there are not supposed to be too many jobs for MAs (or medical biller or coder) despite what those private $$ for-profit tech schools say. Most employers prefer applicants with, at least, 1-2 years experience in the field to possibly get the job. It’s a rather entry-level position. Perhaps an associate (two-year) degree for RN (registered nurse) would allow you to get more established before getting more schooling for PA who does a lot of the same duties as a licensed physician but with supervision and other guidelines.

If still interested in training for MA (or another trade), please forgo those private for-profit tech schools and instead consider the more affordable (and usually more regulated) county vo-tech school or community college as long as the program is Accredited within the industry.

No. The pay is horrible (a few dollars above minimum wage). I know at least three MAs who are LPN programs, so that should tell you something there.
On that note, go for LPN.

I took medical assisting back in 2007 now its 2010, and i’m still without a job. So that should tell you something right there. Medical assisting used to be in demand but not anymore, its only in demand for medical assistants with experience in the field. So if your going into this please have a place set up that will hire you otherwise withdraw from the program. You will have more of a chance gaining employment as a CNA then you will a medical assistant. Medical assisting pays minimum wage or a few dollars above it, there are ways of making it work but it would be difficult. I don’t mean to be a debbie downer but this is just the reality I have come to see.
