Selecting Quality CME: It’s All About the Faculty

When selecting primary care CME activities, it’s important to make the most of your time and investment. One of the most important factors to consider is the quality of the faculty from whom you will be learning.

As you consider your next CME meeting, we recommend that you ask yourself these questions:

* Are the faculty well-known experts in their field of practice?
* Do the faculty come from influential medical institutions?
* Do the faculty understand the specific needs of primary care clinicians?

Medical Education Resources (MER) utilizes only the highest quality faculty for our CME meetings. When you register for an MER seminar, you can be confident that all of our presenters are distinguished experts in their specialty. Our faculty members come from leading medical institutions, including:

Albert Einstein
Mayo Clinic
Baylor
Mount Sinai
Cleveland Clinic
NYU
Harvard
Stanford
Johns Hopkins
Yale

The faculty chosen by MER work closely with primary care clinicians in their practices to provide the highest quality of care for patients. This enables them to provide real-world case examples that are relevant to your primary care practice.

Annually, MER offers more than 60 CME programs for Primary Care Practitioners all across the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, and the United Kingdom. View our list of CME courses.

CME Courses Explained

CME courses are a specific method of continuing education for medical profession. The courses are designed to effectively assist medical field personnel in maintaining their knowledge and learn new skills to develop in various areas of expertise.

These activities of medical CME educational opportunities can be in the form of abundant medical conferences, direct mail, printed publications, online programs, audio/video and other electronic means.

The content of these programs is developed, reviewed and submitted to the faculty experts in specific clinical areas. A similar process is used in academic journals and any potentially conflicting financial relationships for faculty members can be expressed and resolved meaningfully.

However, critics argue that drug and device manufacturers often use their financial strength to gain favor when promoting their drugs or devices.

CME courses being administered at medical conferences is not something new. The idea of institutionalized education for medicine, or the medical education affiliated with medical universities and other teaching medical institutions, was being conducted when doctors and nurses alike continued their learning by meeting with their peers regularly.

Case discussions and meetings were held to discuss medical published articles that essentially promoted the idea of a continuance of learning. In the 1950’s through the 1980’s, the medical CME outfit was funded almost exclusively by the pharmaceutical industry.

The concern about information bias whether it was intentional or otherwise leads to greater control of CME funding sources. Because of this, agencies such as the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education was brought to fruition. The US and Britain, among others, are represented by the organization.
